World Plumbing Day (11 March) is intended to provide anyone or any organisation involved in the global plumbing industry with an opportunity to promote the important role played by the industry. It is hoped that all forms of media (written, TV and radio) will report on activities being undertaken to celebrate the Day and that people in many countries will gain a better understanding of plumbing.
This list of suggested activities has been compiled by the World Plumbing Council to provide ideas as to how to promote and celebrate World Plumbing Day. It is not intended to be exhaustive and WPC is sure that there will be other equally useful and effective ways of promoting the Day. Anything which alerts people to the fact that plumbing is important is good!
One of the simplest ways of promoting a message to the media is to issue press releases. WPC will issue its own release.
Other plumbing organisations are invited to issue their own releases promoting the Day and the work which their organisation does within the industry. Use can be made of the World Plumbing Day logo and any of the literature (such as the World Plumbing Day Facts Sheets) which are published on this World Plumbing Day website.
Features in Plumbing Industry and other publications
Where an organisation publishes its own magazine or contributes to an industry publication then it is suggested that the issue published in or around March should be a special World Plumbing Day edition- again with appropriate use of the World Plumbing Day logo and articles promoting the role which plumbing plays in health and the environment.
Another option is for organisations to arrange a supplement in leading newspapers of their countries with a mixture of paid for advertising of plumbing products and services and a message about the Day and the industry’s role.
Motions in state or national legislatures
In many countries it is common practice for elected politicians to propose motions highlighting a particular cause. Where plumbing organisations have links with politicians in their state and national legislatures, it is suggested that they be contacted with a view to proposing a motion celebrating World Plumbing Day on 11 March. A proposed text for such a motion can be downloaded here (PDF).
It is suggested that each organisation arranging for such a motion to be proposed amends the suggested text by making appropriate references to the work which their organisation plays within the industry in their country.
Organisations are encouraged to arrange an event or meeting which will highlight World Plumbing Day. The format and content of such a meeting will vary from organisation to organisation. Some may wish to arrange a lecture which promotes plumbing. Others might want to hold a regular meeting on World Plumbing Day.
General awareness raising
There are many ways in which organisations and individuals can create awareness at the local level. For example, retail and wholesale businesses might want to have a special promotion on World Plumbing Day to alert their customers to the Day. Plumbing industry organisations may wish to partner with wholesaler and manufacturer organisations in their country to undertake a joint promotional activity related to World Plumbing Day. Individuals might undertake activities which are designed to draw the attention of the media and the public while promoting the important underlying message of the Day. For example, one prominent member of the Scottish plumbing industry dressed up with placards and distributed leaflets about the importance of plumbing in one of the main squares in Scotland’s largest city.
Letters to newspapers
Many countries have a practice where major newspapers carry a letter page in which letters comment on or draw attention to a cause or issue. It is suggested that prominent plumbing industry personnel in each country should write to the editors of that country’s major and local newspapers highlighting World Plumbing Day. A suggested format for such a letter can be downloaded here (PDF). However, many newspapers insist that letters which they publish are unique to that newspaper and it is recommended that variations on the letter are used if communicating with more than one publication. It is also proposed that the chances of publication will be increased if the letter refers to the activity of the organisation with which the letter writer is associated.
Promote your organisation’s “GREEN” role
Many plumbing industry organisations are actively involved in activities related to the environmental role of today’s plumbing industry and World Plumbing Day provides a good opportunity to emphasise this role to the general public. WPC has published a Facts Sheet on the environmental aspects of plumbing and this may be used by organisations to assist them in their promotional work
Talks in schools
Many schools would welcome the opportunity to have a visit from a representative of the plumbing industry to talk about the health (and/or environmental aspects of plumbing). WPC members have given talks about “Water and Health” in their local primary school and this provided an excellent opportunity to promote our industry. A copy of the PowerPoint presentation can be downloaded here. The last slides reference the World Plumbing Council poster contest that students can participate in. A copy of the contest rules can also be downloaded here and printed for distribution at the school or in a poster format.
Link with universities and colleges
Plumbing organisations might consider linking with their local technical colleges and universities to undertake a joint activity promoting the educational aspects of plumbing.
List of World Plumbing Day activities
There is a section on the website which lists activities which are to be undertaken to celebrate World Plumbing Day and all organisations and individuals planning some event or activity can have this listed on the website. Details should be sent to: firstname.lastname@example.org
World Plumbing Day Twitter account
WPC has an account on the social networking site Twitter. This will be used on a daily basis leading up to World Plumbing Day to promote the health and environmental role of the plumbing industry and to highlight activities being carried out in various countries.
